Thanjavur has exotic South Indian recipes that are easy to cook and delicious to relish. This Poricha Kootu is one of a traditional dish in our Tamil brahmins often. This was actually a modified vertion of a marati Dish Sappak Pitla Vegetables cooked in a coconut and dal gravy with typical south Indian spice blend. பீர்கங்காய் பொரிச்ச கூட்டு.

Ingredients
Moong Dal 1/4 Cup
Chopped Ridge Gourd = 2 Cups
To Roast and grind
Toor Dahl = 2 tsp
Urad Dahl = 1 tsp
Peppercorns = 1 tsp
Red chillies = 2 or 3 nos (according to taste)
Grated coconut = 4 tsp
For Tempering
1 Tbsp Coconut Oil
1 tsp Mustard seeds
2 tsp Urad dahl
2 no's Red Chillies
3-4 Curry leaves
Coriander leaves
For garnish
1/2 tsp Asafoetida

Preparation Method
Pressure cook the Moong dahl and keep it aside. Meanwhile roast all the ingredients, except the coconut. Allow it to cool and then grind the mixture along with coconut into a smooth paste adding little water. Cover and cook the chopped ridge gourds with little salt in a pan. Then add the dahl and the ground mixture and allow it to boil for another 3-4 minutes and turn off the stove. Heat a pan, add coconut oil, mustard seeds and once they crackle, add the urad dahl, chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida. Pour the tempering and garnish it with coriander leaves.
